The environmental toll of animal-people meat production extends far beyond land use. These emissions contribute to rapidly rising global temperatures, making 2023 the hottest year on record. The consequences are dire: the accelerated melting of ice, thawing permafrost, and the increased frequency and severity of heatwaves, hurricanes, floods, droughts, and wildfires. In light of these threats, the World Health Organization (WHO) has called for a global shift towards vegan diets. This approach can address both climate change and the risk of future pandemics.

On June 22, 2024, 12 days prior to an election, Extinction Rebellion UK organized the “Restore Nature Now March”, uniting over 300 allies and more than 60,000 attendees from across the UK, sending a powerful message to politicians demanding effective action to mitigate this global environmental crisis. Dale Vince (vegan), a green businessman and a strong advocate for veganism as a solution to climate change, whom The Sunday Times calls “Labor’s Green Knight,” spoke at the rally. “The great news is it’s in our power. We don’t have to wait for governments. We don’t have to wait for big corporations. If we stop buying that stuff, we stop making it, and, for me, that’s an empowering message.”

In 2024, a Congressman from the Democratic Party penned a letter urging the President to increase vegan food options in all federal facilities nationwide. The letter garnered the support of 55 other members of Congress. By choosing a vegan lifestyle, we can combat environmental destruction, mitigate the climate crisis, and prevent spread of zoonotic outbreaks. At the same time, we can promote compassion and reduce suffering, laying the groundwork for global peace.
